Poole Harbour is one of the largest natural harbours in the world, although for the most part it is shallow (<2m) with large tracts of tidal mudflats and sandbanks. Seen here between 20:00 and 21:30 on a late July evening, presenting a tranquil and atmospheric scene. The shallow conditions in the harbour make it particularly popular with wind and kite-surfers and with all other kinds of small nautical craft, all year round. Raking for cockles buried shallow in the sand is a popular traditional activity at low tide, particularly along the foreshore between Compton Acres and Sandbanks. The timeless beauty of the New Forest derives from its unique natural and cultural heritage. In 1079 William the Conqueror established the Forest and its strict laws to safeguard the deer for hunting. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Moors Valley Country Park Flanking the Avon valley, this part of Dorset is characterised by large tracts of coniferous woodland, managed commercially by the Forestry Commission. To open up this area to the general public two country parks have been formed, Avon Heath to the south of the A31 and Moors Valley to the north. The main feature at Moors Valley Country Park is the Playtrail – a forest trail linking a number of activity areas filled with timber constructions such as raised walkways, rope bridges, a giant ants nest and monstrous creatures. Both very young (and old) can let off steam and play. Additionally there are numerous cycle routes, an adventure playground, information centre and acres of forest – yet solitude can still be found just a short distance from the car park. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Moors Valley Railway
Enjoyment for all the family - take a ride on the train and see the south's longest, fully signalled narrow gauge steam railway. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Portsmouth Click here to see the Spinacre Tower Webcam which is updated every hour. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Set amongst the woodland of Dorset lays 65 acres of sanctuary for over 150 primates. Monkey World was set up in 1987 by Jim and Alison Cronin to provide abused Spanish beach chimps with a permanent, stable home. Today Monkey World works in conjunction with foreign governments from all over the world to stop the illegal smuggling of apes out of Africa and Asia. At the park visitors can see more than 150 primates of 15 different species. |
